How
can words be found to describe the Tuscan countryside? How
can a landscape capable of expressing itself in a language
all its own, rich and unambiguous, be verbalized? The beauty
of our country houses surrounded by cypresses or sunk in
olive groves or afloat in a sea of alfalfa, cannot be translated
into words.
In order to get an idea of the explosion of flowering poppies
in springtime you have to have to see it before your eyes.
And you can be enrapt breathless at the sight of little
churches set like jewels in valleys, with a perfect composition
of the trees, of the plantations, of the the houses. Any
description whatever, verbal or written, may be effective
or poetic but cannot ever equal the emotion stirred by our
countryside, by the sight of it, by its intense perfume,
by the pleasure of a visit to it.
